Today one of my co-workers returned from Switzerland and brought back some delicious, creamy Swiss chocolates. Later, Dweebcentric dropped by my office. She was fresh off the plane from Greece and bearing the gift of Ouzo.
Chocolate and liquor delivered right to my desk… I’m hard pressed to think of a better Monday.

In June I signed up for some tennis lessons at a local park. I haven’t really played tennis or taken formal lessons since middle school, so this was an attempt to get back into the game after a long absence. Let me not forget to mention that 65 Maple Ave and I had some pretty intense games on the court behind our dorm in college too, but even that was quite some time ago. I expected that getting back into things was going to be a challenge.
In a way, it is a challenge. To be good I’d need a LOT of work, much more than I am getting in just this one class. But just to have people to play the game with has been wonderful. I feel like I did in high school after playing a long game of one sport or another – tired, a bit sore, and happy that I pushed myself to do something. And as an added bonus, I’ve lost 5 lbs since I started playing a month ago. What’s not to love?
Sadly, lessons end next week and I’ll have to search out another opportunity to play. Now that I have finally started playing again, I don’t want to stop. I hear Sampras is trying to get back into the game too. Maybe he could use a hitting partner.

While we could use some cold November rain, we’ll have to settle for warm July rain tonight. But DC 101 is playing some Guns N’ Roses tonight anyway. That song reminds me of visiting an amusement park with a friend and her family when I was in middle school. Her Vegas cousins were with us and one of them kept rapidly repeating “Nothing lasts forever even cold November rain.” I, having always been hip to what the kids are listening to, had no idea what he was talking about. Finally, getting annoyed, I said to him very matter-of-factly “It doesn’t rain in Ohio in November, it snows.” Duh. He thought that was funny.
I was secretly amused shortly thereafter when he lost his new Batman baseball cap on the log flume.

Episode three of Shaq’s Big Challenge aired last night on ABC. I did not see the show, nor did I blog about episode two. That’s probably because the show has gone from ridiculous to slightly less ridiculous and is therefore less enjoyable for viewers.
Week two was all about trying to get mandatory PE reinstated in schools. Not to completely deprive you of your Shaq wisdom, here are just a few memorable moments from week two.
1) Shaq hires a mean personal trainer for the kids because, as he so eloquently put it, he was “bamboozled” by the children when he left them to self-motivate and self-report where exercise was concerned.
2) One of the two female contestants has a panic attack and is carted away on a stretcher. Concerned, Shaq turns on the doctor and the trainer and insists “You’re killin’ them.”
3) Shaq’s quote of the week: “If we have enough money to send children to war, we should have enough money to send children to mandatory PE.”

I have been catching up with some old friends, spending time with some new friends, and generally enjoying life in DC over the past week and half. My Flickr photos from the adventurous weekend that started it all have been posted (See scary astronaut doll below) and I will try to catch up with the blogging soon.
